Diarrhea
We received this email asking Abby this question:
I routinely have attacks of severe abdominal craps and diarrhea. The Doctors
are at a loss as to the actual diagnosis, although I lean toward Crones Disease.
Is there anything herbal that can help with the symptoms?
John
Abby responded with this answer:
John, There are a number of good herbal remedies for diarrhea and abdominal
cramps (I assume that "abdominal craps" was a Freudian typo ;-)
Take your pick of the following:
1) To a decoction of fresh Basil add a little Honey and freshly grated Nutmeg.
Drink as often as you feel necessary for control.
2) Wild Bergamot (Monarda punctata or M. fistulosa) a.k.a. Horsemint or Bee
Balm drank daily as a tea for flatulent colic, nausea, and diarrhea.
3) Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria or Spiraea ulmaria) a.k.a. Queen of the
Meadow, Bridewort, or Lady of the Meadow makes a very tasty tea and is a
very good astringent for diarrhea.
4) Red Raspberry (Rubus spp.) leaf tea at least twice a day, and eating
raspberries is also very helpful during a bout of diarrhea.
5) Strawberry (Fragaria vesca and other spp) leaf tea will neutralize excess
acid in the stomach, and eating strawberries will also be helpful during
a bout of diarrhea.
6) Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) infused in spring water is an excellent
stomachic. (Excessive doses are dangerous)
7) Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium) leaf tea is good for cramps and diarrhea.
(Excessive doses of this herb are also dangerous)
To your diet add more Parsley, Rosemary, Sage, Thyme, Basil, Marjoram, fresh
Mint and Lettuce, along with the Raspberries and Strawberries.
Best of health to you John!
Herbally yours, Abby
